My first clue: Benjamin Clymer over at Hodinkee has already started hyping it.
My second clue: the diverse nature of the timepieces to be shown. The April 13 auction includes items made from the 16th century to now–the coolest stuff of course is going to be the 1940s- and ’50s-era Rolex and Patek Philippes.
For instance: a 1950 Rolex Watch owned by a famous US Navy commander ($60,000); a 14k gold Rolex Oyster Cosmograph Daytona with original box and certificate ($35,000); a 1950s-era perpetual calendar chronograph Patek Philippe ($350,000); a 1900 Swiss perpetual calendar watch ($60,000) made for Mir Osman Ali Khan, who in the 1940s was the richest man in the world.
There will be more than 200 lots total–including a few horologically important works like a musical table clock made in 1780 ($60,000) and a bronze musical singing bird automaton clock, circa 1828 ($300,000).
It all starts at 11 a.m. next Wednesday. If you want a preview, join the Hodinkee crew on Monday, April 11, at Sotheby’s for beer and drooling.
